Novel Engineering is an innovative approach to integrate engineering and literacy in elementary and middle school. Recommended for grades K-6, participants will read a short story as a group and then design a solutions for a problem that a character is facing in the book. Slow stitching is a mindful embroidery practice where you stitch without a plan, focusing on the process and feel of the thread and fabric. Participants simply take a piece of fabric, needle and thread and use simple stitches upon the textile. No sewing experience necessary! Materials for the base and fabric scraps, lace bits, buttons, threads, fabric scissors, and needles will be provided. It is helpful to bring your own thimble, good sharp scissors and any bits and bobs you might want to incorporate to personalize your piece. Registration is required.

The year is 1755 and it’s Carnival season in Venice, time for the masquerade ball. A chance for rich and poor, old, and young to come together everyone to be equal for a night. But when everyone is hiding their identity, it can be hard to know who you are talking to. The question on everyone’s lips is who is the figure in red? Seen conversing with several guests but no one admits to knowing them. A glass smashes and the figure is found dead on the floor. Who were they? And why did someone want them dead? It’s your job to find out…

MaryAnn McGarry, Professor of Environmental Science and Policy Emerita at Plymouth State University, will give a presentation about resilience and recovery from two accidents, to walk the Portuguese Camino, climb Kilimanjaro, raft the Tatshenshini, and trek over the Scottish Highlands. All in the span of two years after turning 65. She will share insights about what she learned about herself in the process of training, healing and aging as well highlights of the trips.
